What is this?

This is Lensman.

Lensman is a website.

It’s a place where I can show and get feedback on my work. It’ll mostly consist of photography and video, but be warned that I’m someone who considers an elegant database a work of art, so it could be anything.

It’s me realizing that as much as I like Instagram, I wasn’t getting what I wanted out of it and didn’t see a reasonable alternative out there. So, inspired by similar musings by Warren Ellis, Nick Stamas and others, this is my first shot at building it myself

Having spent my formative years in San Francisco’s Lower Haight where, to paraphrase Groucho Marx, “Practically everybody in the Lower Haight had half a mind to launch a ‘zine, and did.” I’m feeling like the best place to start is by thinking of it as a fotozine.

I want to see for myself what can be done to compose in this format using grid tools and whatever else I decide to drop in. Beyond some basic ideas on usability, I’d imagine you’ll see more than a bit of Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics. There will also be a dash of Interview magazine in that I intend to ruthlessly use every trick and tool in the book to create something compelling and monitizable in some way.

Usage-wise, while I tried to make this site as mobile friendly as possible, some of the layouts employ things like 6 column grids and will really only work full size. In future, I’ll have some features designed explicitly for mobile but for now you’re going to be better off on a proper screen.

Currently, it’s just my stuff but I want to feature other people as well. I haven’t a clue what the criteria will be or really how it’ll work but if you’re interested just let me know.

Off we go.
